Constipation: here are the foods to avoid, according to a nutritionist: Femme Actuelle Le MAG

“The normal frequency of bowel movements varies widely from one individual to another (between three per day and three per week)”, explains Health Insurance. In adults, we speak of constipation when “the usual rhythm of stool emission is disrupted and abnormally prolonged (less than three stools per week)”, but also when the stools change consistency and become harder. This can be occasional, severe or chronic. According to Health Insurance, occasional constipation in adults is, in general, due to a change in daily habits (travel, change in diet, stress, immobilization, hospitalization, etc.), a particular life situation such as the last months of pregnancy, temporary taking of medication; or “holding back” and not responding to the need to have a bowel movement (for example in the presence of hemorrhoids or anal fissure).

Diet plays a crucial role in the occurrence of constipation. In a video posted on TikTok, nutritionist Raphaël Gruman listed three foods that should be avoided in order not to be constipated.

Focus on three foods that promote constipation, according to this nutritionist

In the video posted on his TikTok account @raphaelgrumanthe nutritionist points out three foods that promote constipation.

The proteins

According to the expert, proteins, which are mainly found in meat or fish, are “dry materials, which will tend to capture the water found in the colon and therefore harden the stools.” In his video, the nutritionist takes the example of chicken breast.

Green bananas

When we consume “a green banana that is not very ripe, carbohydrates complexes will tend to trap water and promote constipation” explains the nutritionist. The starch present in an unripe banana can also be difficult to digest and thus promote constipation. Conversely, “the yellower the banana, the more sugars will be processed and the less constipating it will be.”

Rice

In his video, the expert explains that the starch present in rice will come “capture the water that we have in the colon and reduce the frequency of stools.” This is why we use rice as a constipation, especially when we have gastroenteritis.

It is therefore better to limit the consumption of these foods if you are prone to constipation. It is also advisable to drink plenty of water when you are constipated. In fact, the more hydrated the body is, the more easily the stools are evacuated, since they contain more water.

If your constipation is accompanied by a fever above 37.5°C, severe stomach pain or vomiting, do not hesitate to consult a doctor who will be able to help you best.
