Wolfsburg celebrates seventh cup win in a row

VfL Wolfsburg continues its success story. In the DFB Cup, one goal is enough for the women to win their seventh final in a row. The team from the Autostadt against Eintracht Frankfurt was outnumbered early on.

VfL Wolfsburg continued its impressive streak of success in the women’s DFB Cup and despite being red for national goalkeeper Almuth Schult, won the title for the seventh time in a row. The wolves defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 (0-0, 0-0) in the final in Cologne after extra time and celebrated their 42nd victory in this competition in a row.

Ewa Pajor scored the late winning goal in the 118th minute for Stephan Lerch’s team, who will join the male U17 from 1899 Hoffenheim in the summer. Captain Schult saw the red card in extra time for an awkward attack when running out. Hope in the fight for the fifth double in a row are now the Frankfurt women, of all people, who will compete at Bayern Munich on the last match day. The leader of the table, whom Wolfsburg eliminated in the cup semi-finals, goes into the season finale on June 6th with a two-point lead over VfL and a 23-goal difference.

Eintracht victory of the men as a motivational injection

In the first year after the merger with 1. FFC, Frankfurt missed the European Cup in sixth place, now the first title was denied despite a great fight. The previous club, which last defeated Wolfsburg in the cup in 2013, is still the record winner with nine successes, Wolfsburg now has eight.

The Frankfurt women tried to motivate themselves in a special way. Coach Nikos Arnautis showed a video of the 3-1 final victory of the Eintracht men in 2018 against FC Bayern on Friday. And club president Peter Fischer had called in a video to win a “sister” for the men’s trophy “against the fenders from Wolfsburg”.

The outsider also resisted passionately. The technical superiority of VfL was obvious, and so initially only the Wolfsburg had chances through Pajor, whose deflected shot narrowly missed (9th), or Fridolina Rolfö (13th). After half an hour, the shock for Eintracht: Captain Tanja Pawollek, who had ensured great order in the defensive midfield until then, injured her knee in a press blow with Lena Oberdorf. The 22-year-old screamed out loud in pain and had to be replaced. VfL pressed until the break, but Oberdorf only hit the post (42nd).

Frankfurt women deliver defensive battle

Immediately after the break, Wolfsburg’s Joelle Wedemeyer was also injured more seriously and had to leave the field. The pressure from the series winner was still increasing, but the Frankfurt women gave VfL a bitter defensive battle. In the 59th minute they almost set the decisive counterattack, but the national goalkeeper Schult, who had not been tested until then, confidently held Alexandra Johannsdottir’s shot with one hand. On the other hand, Merle Frohms steered a sinking attempt by Rolfö to the post shortly before the end of regular time.

When Schult caught Lara Prasnikar, who was running towards her, instead of the ball in extra time (98th), she had to leave the field and then sat crying in the stands. Prasnikar was blocked in a promising position (115th), on the other hand Pajor became the match winner with her low shot.
