Meghan is building a life in the USA. She no longer seems to be interested in the British citizenship that was once aspired to.

Through her marriage to Prince Harry (36), Duchess Meghan (39) enjoys the privilege of permanent residence in Great Britain. However, the US-American does not have British citizenship – and seems to have given up her pursuit of it. As reported by the Daily Mail, Meghan has been allowed to apply for citizenship since November 21, 2020 – three years after moving to the United Kingdom. Because of the "Megxit", this would not be very promising.

Home Office guidelines state that applicants must have lived in the UK for at least three years before they can legally qualify for a UK passport. During this period they are allowed to leave the country for a maximum of 270 days. A criterion that Meghan does not meet due to numerous trips and moves to Canada and then to her home country, the USA.

No special treatment

Harry and Meghan married in May 2018. The year before, it was publicly announced that the former actress was seeking British citizenship. Harry's then Communications Secretary Jason Knauf told the BBC, "I can also say that she intends to become a British citizen and will go through the process that some of you may know will take a few years."
