This is good news for fans of Reels on Facebook. The thumbs-up social network has just announced that it has extended the duration of Reels, these short videos in portrait format (9:16), which appeared a little over a year ago on the platform in France, after having landed on Instagram, another network of the Meta group. The idea? Attract more creators and viewers.

Facebook aligns its Reels with those of Instagram and adds new features

If you’ve created a Reel since March 3 on Facebook, you may have noticed that the maximum duration has been increased from 60 to 90 seconds. Instagram had already benefited from a shift from 60 to 90 seconds of its Reels last summer.

In a short video, Facebook unveiled new features to extend, in addition to the duration, the possibilities of creation. We find for example “Memories” (Memories), the famous suggestions of memories of Facebook that you can now transform into Reel.

Let’s also mention “Grooves”, a feature that intervenes directly at the time of the creation of the Reel and which allows you to automatically align and synchronize your video with the rhythm of the song you have chosen. Finally, Facebook Reels welcomes templates, short models of 2, 3, 4 or 5 seconds that you can add to your short videos.

Reels on Facebook still very far from the maximum duration of TikTok videos

With a duration of up to 90 seconds, Reels offer more possibilities to users and now exceed YouTube Shorts, the competing format of Google’s video platform, which remains stuck at 60 seconds for now.

On the other hand, we are still far from the maximum duration of videos published on TikTok, which can reach 10 minutes. The ByteDance group’s social network has taken up the challenge of offering longer videos (3 minutes previously) to get closer to YouTube and push its creators to offer more elaborate content, and to the media and brands to take a little more interest. more to the platform that appeals to both young people and adults now.

Adding 30 seconds to Reels at the maximum limit won’t revolutionize the genre or keep TikTok teams awake. It should be seen more here as a test braid for Facebook, perhaps intended to push back this limit even more significantly in the future. The Meta group does not want to be wrong and prefers to move forward step by step, while the number of Reels shared has more than doubled over the last six months.
