Former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has asked forgiveness for the manner of his resignation in the face of the advancing Taliban. “I apologize to the Afghan people that I could not see to another end,” wrote Ghani on Twitter. The former head of state, however, denied allegations that he took millions of dollars in government money with him when he escaped.

Ghani said he left the country at the urging of the security forces. He wanted to avoid the risk of bloody street fights. Ghani left Afghanistan on August 15 and fled to the United Arab Emirates. After the radical Islamic Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, Ghani spoke on video about the political situation in his country. However, the US government stated that Ghani was no longer a major player in Afghanistan.

The Taliban presented their interim government on Tuesday, which consists exclusively of members of the Islamist militia and does not include women. In total, the Islamists announced the occupation of 33 leadership positions. According to a list given to the Afghan broadcaster Tolonews is available, including four men who were previously detained in the Guantanamo penal camp by the United States.

The four new cabinet members are part of the so-called “Taliban Five”, which were exchanged in 2014 for the US soldier Bowe Bergdahl captured by the Taliban. While they met with massive reservations from the US and the EU, China welcomed the move.
