Google has just made a major announcement for users of its Wallet application, via its support page: from June 10, smartphones with a version lower than Android 9 will no longer be able to continue using the application. This decision also applies to connected watches running Wear OS, which must run version 2 or later.
This means that users whose smartphones or smartwatches run older versions of Android will no longer be able to use Google Wallet after this date. Google justifies this change for security reasons, saying that future security updates will no longer be compatible with versions older than Android 9.

Google Wallet, formerly Google Pay, is a secure digital wallet allowing quick access to all kinds of cards, whether bank or not, as well as dematerialized ticketing or digital identifiers. Initially compatible with older versions of Android, such as Android 5.0, when it launches in 2022, it will now be inaccessible to devices running Android Nougat (7.0, 7.1) and Oreo (8.0, 8.1). Likewise, owners of watches running Wear OS, which is based on Android, will need to ensure they are running version 2 or later to continue using Google Wallet, with older versions being powered by Android 8.0 Oreo.
This decision by Google is part of a consistent policy regarding support for older versions of Android, in the run-up to Google I/O and the presentation of Android15. As a reminder, in August 2023, Google had already stopped supporting Play Services for Android 4.4 KitKat in order to guarantee the security and compatibility of its applications.
