The nose runs continuously, it is tight at night, which makes breathing difficult, and in addition there is usually an uncomfortable pressure pain in the head: a cold can be really annoying in the long run. Fortunately, you don't always have to go to the doctor directly. Simple home remedies for a runny nose can relieve symptoms and ensure that the nose is free and well ventilated again. You should test these home remedies for a cold and other symptoms such as fever:

  • Nasal spray: Nasal spray helps to swell the nasal mucous membrane that is swollen when you have a cold. However, they are only recommended for short-term use. On the one hand, nasal sprays can make you addicted, on the other hand, most of them also dry out the sensitive nasal tissue. The latter can be prevented with a seawater-based nasal spray.
  • Inhale: Inhaling is a good way to moisten the nasal mucosa and the airways and to breathe better. It is best to use a chamomile or thyme-based steam bath, but adults can also use essential oils (e.g. eucalyptus or menthol). The oils are not suitable for children – they can irritate the airways.
  • Rub chest: Here, too, essential oils are used for colds, which are rubbed on the chest. There they should evaporate and can thus be inhaled.
  • Nasal douche: A nasal rinse with a saline solution flushes pathogens such as viruses and bacteria out of the nose so that the infection can heal more easily. In addition, the nasal mucous membrane is moistened.
  • Drink a lot: At least two liters of water a day ensure that the mucous membranes and airways are moistened. In addition to water, herbal tea is also allowed – especially chamomile, because the plant relieves inflammation.
  • Hot bath: Warmth is generally beneficial for a cold and especially for a cold. A cold bath increases blood flow and quickly supports the immune system in the fight against pathogens. A few drops of essential oil can be added to the bathtub for better breathing.
  • Red light: With its targeted warmth, a red light lamp can also be beneficial and relieve pressure pain in the head or face, and it can also promote blood circulation. Simply sit in front of a red light lamp for about 20 minutes with your eyes closed and relax.
  • Spices: Spicy food not only clears the nose, it also helps our sense of taste, which often does not function well when we have a cold, to perceive something at all. Garlic, onions, ginger or cayenne pepper are particularly good.
  • Elevated sleeping position: When lying down, the secretion builds up in the nose and hinders breathing. If you can, you should lie with your head a little higher to sleep.
  • Take a rest: Our body already has enough to do in the fight against viruses and Co., so we should rest if we have a cold or other cold symptoms.
