Globe-trotter since the age of 18, Mathieu Martin disappeared in Argentina three years ago. The Argentine authorities have closed the case but the parents of the young man continue to investigate. The case had just been judged and yet, a new development of size relaunches the investigation. Mathieu Martin, a globetrotter from Toulouse, was reported missing in August 2018 while in Argentina. Passionate about travel since the age of 18, the man spoke regularly to his parents by phone. Having had no news for several weeks, his family decided to notify the authorities. Two Argentinian brothers, Juan and Froilan Cuevas, were found near the places where the Frenchman was last seen. Arrested and tried for the supposed murder of the globetrotter, one of them was sentenced on appeal to 13 years of criminal imprisonment, this Tuesday, September 21. But a surprising testimony came to revive the affair.
In July 2020, the globetrotter’s family decided to testify on the set of It starts today on France 2. During the replay of the program in February 2021, a Paraguayan stumbled upon the program and immediately made the connection. He is convinced that he saw Mathieu Martin in October 2018, three months after the date of his official disappearance. The witness then contacted production and left his contact details. According to him, he hitchhiked the Frenchman and even invited him to dinner with him. For Patricia, her mother, it is a sign of hope. “This gentleman, who is currently in France, went to the gendarmerie for a whole afternoon to give details of his meeting with Mathieu. This Paraguayan trail has not yet been explored”, she told The Dispatch, this Thursday, September 23.
Several witnesses claim to have seen him alive
In the meantime, other witnesses have been heard in this mysterious case of disappearance. In particular a woman: “We received a phone call from a woman. She was contacting us from Uruguay. She told us that she had met someone called Mat several times.”, explained Patricia. Despite these considerable advances, the Argentine authorities want to put an end to it. This also explains the rapid condemnation of one of the Cuevas brothers. Mathieu Martin’s parents have also reportedly received a death certificate from their son, although the body has never been found. “Argentine justice wants to close the file”, said Mathieu’s sister. Indeed, the case has been definitively closed in the country and Juan Cuevas is the designated culprit in this case.
Mathieu Martin’s family are continuing their research, hoping one day to restore the truth.
