Olavo de Carvalho, who greatly contributed to the rise of the far-right president, died overnight from Monday to Tuesday. He was known for his many conspiracy outings and his hatred of communism.
For many, he was the spiritual master of Jair Bolsonaro. The one who, after having allowed the extreme right to make a place for itself in public opinion in Brazil with fake news and a visceral hatred of the left, has long caused rain and good weather in the most high echelons of Brazilian power. Olavo de Carvalho, guru-philosopher-writer-astrologer, died at the age of 74 on the night of Monday to Tuesday, in a hospital in the United States.
His family, who have announced the news on social media, did not specify the causes of death. But according to his daughter Heloisa with whom he was on very bad terms, it was indeed from Covid-19, which he had contracted in mid-January, that Olavo de Carvalho died. A sad paradox when he had continued, like the Brazilian president, to deny the seriousness of the pandemic, contesting in particular the number of deaths and contaminations.
“The fear of an alleged deadly virus is nothing but a horror story to make people cringe and accept slavery as a gift from Santa Claus”he had for example declared in 2020. “May God forgive him for all the wrong he has done”, tweeted her daughter at the announcement of his death.
