James Mangold, director of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”, evoked the conclusion of his film, which did not leave the spectators indifferent. Warning, spoilers!

In theaters since June 28, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth and final installment in the famous saga, ends in an astonishing way that probably did not leave many viewers indifferent.
Particularly surprising and unexpected, the denouement of the film involves our favorite adventurer
in another era (as you might expect given the artifact he’s been chasing throughout the film)…but not the one we had imagined!
Indeed, while the introductory scene of the feature film, set in 1944, could possibly prepare us for
a final confrontation located at this same period, Indiana Jones finds himself propelled by mistake… in 212 BC, during the famous siege of Syracuse. As Nazi soldiers and Greek warriors clash, Indy meets Archimedes, inventor of the Dial of Destiny which allowed him to travel through time..
With some fans suspecting a rewrite of the film’s ending, director James Mangold recently spoke out, saying that this epilogue
antique was long planned:
“This is the ending we wrote two years ago…”explained the director at the microphone of the podcast The Ringer.

“When you start writing something, you don’t know exactly how you’re going to land it. You just keep working.
And there were times when I thought maybe they would end up going back to Germany [ndlr : en 1944] and that Indy would prevent [le personnage de] mads [Mikkelsen] to do what he wanted, but I felt like we had already done that with the intro.“
A few days earlier, with our colleagues from PremièreMangold already explained that
a return to 1944 would have been too predictable in his eyes:
“(…) The playwright in me thought that was way too much information, and probably not the most interesting and surprising lead. The film evokes three time periods:
1944, 1969 and therefore the year 213 BC. It seemed to me both unexpected and perfectly appropriate that when the plane emerges from the time rift, we disembark at that moment. And that we come face to face with the reality of that time.”

Always on the occasion of the podcast The Ringerthe filmmaker also talked about the next scene, where
Indiana Jones is forcibly brought back in 1969 by his goddaughter Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge
), explaining that this return to the contemporary era of the hero was important in his eyes, and that according to him, he could not let him remain at the side of Archimedes :
“Seems to me like it would have been some kind of time warp suicide, it would have been a bit dreary. Would he really have been happy? Even Phoebe says so (…). It all seems more like the whim of a guy who can’t find a good reason to go home.”
Back in 1969, in New York, Indiana Jones
also finds his wife Marionalthough his son Mutt Williams, played by Shia LaBeouf, is not in the feature film.
