In Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, all people in public will have to wear mouth and nose protection even if the safety distance can be maintained.
According to the government, pools and beaches will be exempt from the mask requirement. Even in bars, cafes and restaurants you will not have to wear mouth and nose protection as long as you eat and drink. For private gatherings, an upper limit of 70 people outdoors and 30 people indoors is expected to apply. The details of the regulation have not yet been finalized. For example, the regional government's communication does not mention sporting activities.
Unlike in Catalonia, where new outbreaks of the virus have been recorded in some areas, there has been no significant increase in infections in the Balearic Islands. The measure responded to the increasing negligence of some of the population in taking the precautionary measures, it said. According to media reports, violations of the obligation to wear a mask are subject to a fine of EUR 100.
Distance rules in Mallorca repeatedly violated
On the islands, especially on Mallorca, there had been more and more parties in the past few days, some of which were said to have been attended by more than a hundred people without observing the distance rules. Incidents had been registered in pubs and parks, among others, according to media reports.
According to the decree of the central government of Madrid, which is currently valid for all of Spain as part of the "new normal", an outdoor mask requirement only applies if a distance of at least one and a half meters cannot be maintained.
Spain is one of the worst hit countries in Europe by the pandemic, with just under 28,400 corona deaths and 250,000 infected. Nationwide, however, the numbers have dropped sharply since mid-May.
