Trump does not attend Biden's inauguration
Joe Biden takes office as US President on January 20. Predecessor Trump says he will stay away from the ceremony. Immediately beforehand, he tweeted that his millions of voters will not go unheard in the future.
The surprise is small – but now it's official: The elected US President Donald Trump will not take part in the inauguration of his successor Joe Biden. Trump announced this on Twitter. He didn't give a reason for this. The ceremony will take place on January 20th. Because of the corona pandemic, it should take place without the usual mass audience at the handover.
Since the storming of the Capitol in Washington by militant Trump supporters on Wednesday, the elected incumbent has been under massive pressure. It was only after long hesitation that Trump condemned the violence in Washington and called on the country to "reconcile" and "heal".
Trump is accused of being partly responsible for the excess of violence after he incited his supporters with unsubstantiated allegations of election fraud during a performance in Washington and called for a march on the Capitol. The Democrats are therefore calling for Trump to be deposed before the change in office in the White House. Trump has promised Biden, who is to be sworn in on January 20, an orderly handover. "A new administration will be sworn in on January 20th," he told Trump in a Twitter clip. "I am now concentrating on ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transfer of power."
Just over an hour earlier, Trump had tweeted that the 75 million patriots who had voted for him would continue to have an important voice in the future. "They are not disregarded or treated unfairly in any way or form." Biden had received more than 81 million votes in the election – and what is ultimately decisive is that he also won a majority among the electoral men and women.
Only recently had there been reports that Trump would spend the day at his golf resort in Scotland. The local government had rejected this. In view of the corona restrictions, it was illegal to enter Scotland without a necessary reason, Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon said. "Coming here to play golf is not what I would call a necessary reason." So far, the White House had only announced that Trump had not yet decided what to do on January 20.
In the USA it is a tradition for the outgoing US president to attend the inauguration of his successor. Trump, however, continues to deny having lost the November election. Of course, the then outgoing President Barack Obama attended Trump's inauguration in 2017. However, dozens of Democratic MPs canceled their attendance.
