Especially when we want to lose weight, it is often twice as difficult for us to give up. According to a study, however, a small word helps us to control ourselves.

just who If you urgently want to lose a few kilos, you usually stumble from one temptation to the next in everyday life: In the bakery on the corner, thickly filled rolls are tempting, a colleague brings cake for his birthday and in the evening his partner would like to order pizza as well. Without an iron will, at most a few tears will fall instead of the pounds, because you have already given in again.

Small word – big help

But that doesn’t have to be the case – British researchers are now offering us a very easy way out of our misery. According to her study a little word helps to resist the greatest temptations: Just say no!

Okay, admittedly that sounds almost too easy – but it really works. How did the scientists find out? They divided 45 overweight people into three groups and gave them different tasks for eight weeks.

Group 1 participants completed a questionnaire about their eating habits every four days. Group 2 received the same instruction, but the subjects should additionally say “no” to themselves out loud on typical occasions when they have been tempted to overeating. For example, if there was an “all you can eat” buffet in the restaurant and you considered having another look, although you were already full. Group 3 also got these two tasks. Participants also had to send the researchers a description or photo of the temptation to which they said no.

No, just no!

Not all test persons persevered – around 20 percent of the participants ended the study prematurely. But there is still good news: In all three groups, the number of times the remaining study participants succumbed to temptation was reduced. In group 1 it was 4.2 moments less per week, in group 2 it was an impressive 13.8 moments and in group 3 it was at least 9.0 moments. Thus, the naysayers from group 2 had the greatest success.

Get slim – now for real!

And what does that mean for us now? Quite simply: the next time we stand at the cake buffet and consider whether we really need the third piece of cheese and cream cake, It’s worth saying “no” out loud yourself. Even if people might look funny – we might be happy about the result afterwards!
