Seasickness, fire, incredibly long journeys… The filming in 2002 of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was particularly trying.
W9 broadcasts, this Monday, September 12 at 9 p.m., Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the first part of the cult saga with Johnny Depp in the role of Jack Sparrow. For the occasion, Télé Star invites you to dive behind the scenes of this film released in 2003 and to discover why the shooting was a real ordeal for the team.
The filming of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl began in October 2002. The first two weeks took place in studios then it was necessary to take the direction of the Grenadines Islands. It was the scenes shot on the high seas that were particularly difficult to achieve. Indeed, the seasickness hit part of the team while it was also necessary to manage the decorations which were spread out over nearly 60 kilometers long. The boats were used for the movement of the teams but also as filming locations. In total, 300 people traveled an hour and a half every day to get to the set.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl certainly lives up to its name. In September 2002, a few weeks before filming began, a fire happened in the studios. If no one was injured, property damage amounted to $350,000. A sum quickly reimbursed by the profits made on the release of the film. Indeed, the first part of the saga Pirates of the Caribbean grossed $305 million at the US box office. In France, the film was also a real hit with more than 3.8 million admissions in dark rooms. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl was nominated five times for the 2004 Oscars, including in the Best Actor category for Johnny Depp.
