Realme 9 Pro in practical test: More than glitter design?

In recent years, Realme has fought for a firm place in the middle class with various models. Above all, the so-called number series is aimed at buyers in this segment with good technology at comparatively low prices. According to the Chinese manufacturer, the strategy is working: the smartphones are selling like hot cakes. Reason enough, then, to add two new models to the Realme 9 Pro series. COMPUTER BILD took a closer look at the Realme 9 Pro.

Realme 9 Pro: Iridescent Shell

Unlike many other smartphone manufacturers, Realme has relied on special designs for the back since the beginning. This is no different with the Realme 9 Pro: The test device in Sunrise Blue surprises with glitter effects. However, the plastic back is very prone to fingerprints and slips out of your hand easily. Unlike the Realme 9 Pro Plus, the fingerprint scanner is not in the display but in the power button. On the underside is the USB-C socket for the included charging cable including the mains plug and a jack socket. The Realme 9 Pro is not waterproof.

The LC display of the Realme 9 Pro is 6.6 inches.

The manufacturer installs a 6.6-inch LC display on the front. It differs not only in size from the Realme 9 Pro Plus. When looking from the side or in sunlight, the screen is too dark and the image doesn’t look as high-contrast and true to color. A refresh rate of up to 90 Hertz is noticeable in everyday life due to smooth scrolling on websites and in apps.

Camera qualities of a pro?

On paper, the Realme 9 Pro offers better features than the 9 Pro Plus. But this impression is deceptive: Although the main camera offers 64 megapixels (MP), a weaker sensor is installed in comparison. The ultra-wide-angle lens (8 MP) and the depth sensor (2 MP), on the other hand, are identical.

In practice, it can be seen that the Realme 9 Pro is not quite as powerful as the Plus model. The recordings look a little less detailed – but in daylight there are not too big differences. When shooting with zoom, the smartphone enlarges up to six times. The result is not convincing: the images are muddy and clearly lose detail. Realme offers a star, street and night mode in the app.

The Realme shows problems with the details when shooting with zoom.

The front camera with 16 MP is integrated in a hole at the top left of the display on the front. This enables good shots to be taken in daylight. Realme does not have a preset beauty filter ex works. The images appear natural and true to color. In portrait mode, the background is reliably blurred.

Fast on the go in everyday life

Inside the Realme 9 Pro, the manufacturer uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 with either 6 or 8 gigabytes (GB) of working memory (RAM). This means that the smartphone is fast on the move in everyday life. The internal memory is 128 GB – it can be expanded to 256 GB with a memory card. For this option, however, you do without a second SIM card. The latest cellular standard 5G is part of Realme’s permanent offering – as well as Wifi 6, Bluetooth 5.1 and NFC. Ex works, Realme uses Android 12 as the operating system for the Realme 9 Pro.

Massive loadout

The included power plugs have become rare in 2022 – Realme will continue to give buyers this extra. In combination with the charging cable, the bulky plug creates 60 watts and quickly charges the battery with 5,000 mAh. The battery reserve in the Realme 9 Pro is slightly larger than in the Plus model – it remains to be seen how this will affect the runtime under full load.

Realme 9 Pro: prices, colors, availability

The Realme 9 Pro will be released in Germany in February 2022. Initially, Realme is asking for a recommended retail price of 319.99 euros for the version with 6 GB RAM – the version with 8 GB RAM goes over the counter for 349.99 euros. In terms of color, customers can choose between Sunrise Blue (light blue), Midnight Black (black) and Aurora Green (dark green). A special offer will be available from February 23 to 27, 2022: the 6 GB version will cost 319.99 euros and the 8 GB version will cost 349.99 euros.

Realme 9 Pro: conclusion of the practical test:

The Realme 9 Pro shows itself from its best side in the practical test. The smartphone comes up with solid technology and is fast on the go in everyday life. Mobile gaming doesn’t cause any problems for the device either. It is only problematic if zoom recordings are the main selling point. The battery is larger than that of the Realme 9 Pro Plus and should be full again quickly given the included power plug.
