Riot Games Pays $ 100 Million to Close Sex Discrimination Class Action

Since 2018, Riot Games faces class action lawsuit over sexism discrimination. Several of its former employees launched this legal procedure after providing evidence and testimony of certain offensive behavior on the part of the Californian developer.

This lawsuit follows a high-profile article published in Kotaku titled “Inside the culture of sexism at Riot Games,” which detailed many of these behaviors carried out by prominent members of the League of Legends publisher, or or directly rooted in the studio’s culture towards women.

An agreement reached by all parties

A Washington Post article testifies to the end of this lawsuit after years of litigation. The law firm Genie Harrison, who has been at the forefront of other high-profile sexual harassment lawsuits like the Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and actor Kevin Spacey case, has the following after the deal struck: “This is a great day for the women at Riot Games, and for the women in all video game and tech companies, who deserve a workplace free from harassment and discrimination. We value Riot’s introspection and have been working since 2018 to become a more diverse and inclusive company. “

In this article it is said that Riot Games will pay a total of $ 100 million. Of this sum, 80 million will go to the plaintiffs in settlement of their grievances, while the rest will be used to remunerate the work of the law firm of the said plaintiffs. This is’ an amount much higher than the previous agreement, located at 10 million in 2019, which had been blocked by the California Department of Employment and Housing because it believed the plaintiffs were entitled to more.

We are also told that these 80 million were distributed among the 2,300 employees of Riot Games between 2014 and today, according to a time scale in the company. In addition to the amount paid, Riot is committed to carrying out a number of reforms within the company, including transparency of pay scales and a greater presence of women in decisions relating to human resources.
