Survey: purchasing power is the issue that mattered the most to the French at the time of the vote


Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen qualified tonight for the second round of the presidential election. While many themes were discussed during the campaign, it was purchasing power that most interested voters, according to an OpinionWay survey for CNEWS.

60% cited it among the issues that mattered most to them when voting. In the midst of soaring energy prices, the voters of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Marine Le Pen were particularly numerous (72% for each) to say they were sensitive to the question of purchasing power.

The French also mentioned social protection (47% of them), security (35%) and social inequalities (31%) as determining factors in their choice of vote.

Different priorities according to the candidates

If the purchasing power seems to be unanimous among the French, the rest of the priorities are very different depending on the candidates. Emmanuel Macron’s voters cite purchasing power (49%), France’s role in the world (46%) and the war in Ukraine (44%) to justify their decision.

Those of Marine Le Pen are more interested in purchasing power (72% of them), immigration (65%) and security (55%).

Finally, the voters of Jean-Luc Mélenchon above all cited purchasing power (72%), social inequalities (66%) and social protection (65%) as important issues.

With regard to purchasing power, Emmanuel Macron proposes an increase in social benefits. For example, it plans to triple the Macron bonus and lower the charges for the self-employed. He also mentioned the abolition of the audiovisual license fee. As for Marine Le Pen, she wants to lower the VAT on energy products from 20% to 5.5% and allow companies to raise wages by 10% by exempting them from employers’ contributions.
