An 88-year-old from Graz fell victim to a telephone fraudster on Wednesday. The woman pretended to be a police officer and told the man that his stepdaughter was involved in an accident and caused 150,000 euros in damage. In order to avert a prison sentence, she would urgently need money. The pensioner gave the stranger 100,000 euros a little later and the woman disappeared with it, the police said on Thursday. After the stepdaughter did not show up after the payment, the 88-year-old informed the police. But the perpetrator was long gone, the man was unable to provide a personal description due to the darkness.Several attempts at fraud with the same scam On the holiday, numerous similar attempts at fraud had taken place in the Graz area, only one was successful. The trick is always the same: Alleged police officers mainly explain to older people that a relative has had an accident and urgently needs money. The variant is also popular that one has information that break-ins are planned and will therefore keep valuables and cash “safe” with the police. In most cases, victims never see their money or jewelry again.
