Up to 30 centimeters – Lots of fresh snow: The “plow season” has started

Winter is here! At the weekend, snow fell for the first time in large parts of Styria – in Seckau even 30 centimeters, Graz also presented itself as wintry. There was also a lot of snow lying on the Styrian roads – the first endurance test for the white-green winter services. Fresh snow is in sight again from Thursday.

The first look out of the window made children’s eyes light up: trees and houses were covered by a white ceiling. Ms. Holle was particularly hard-working in Upper Styria: In Seckau there was 30 centimeters of fresh snow, in Ramsau 25. for example for the Asfinag team. “We have a weather forecast system to know when, where, what precipitation is falling and to prepare,” explains spokesman Walter Mocnik. A total of ten motorway maintenance depots take care of the road clearance around the clock. Depending on the route, three to six people are assigned: “A clearing section in Styria is around 30 to 50 kilometers.” The sections are shorter on the pack. In addition, there are on-call services to react to large amounts of fresh snow. During Corona, particular attention is paid to separating teams: “If a motorway maintenance depot is down, we have a problem.” However, the Asfinag did not worry about the first snow. Mocnik: “With snowfalls like this, it’s a completely normal winter service.” There was no chaos in Graz In the city, even small amounts of snow often lead to traffic chaos. That didn’t happen in Graz yesterday. On the one hand it was Sunday and on the other hand the holding company had everything under control. 50 vehicles with snow plows, 55 drivers and 114 snow shovels are always ready for action. Main thoroughfares and Bim tracks have top priority when clearing, so so far the situation in Styria has been under control, and because of the lockdown there is also less traffic. According to Zamg, it should be warmer again for the next few days before it will be winter again on Thursday.
