Project Zomboid: Debug mode, how to activate it?

Project Zomboid is one of those games offering a deep and unique experience, with a multitude of possibilities, where replayability is widely present. No part is alike. One of the hidden features, but oh so useful for some players, is the Debug mode, allowing access to many tools for a different experience. Whether it’s to enter cheat codes, add items, change the current weather or just track your stats, the possibilities are endless thanks to the Debug mode. Only, it is not possible to access it from the base. We explain how to do it.

How do I activate Debug mode in Project Zomboid?

This mode is rather easy to activate and use. Everything takes place outside the game, by clicking with the right button of your mouse on the name of the game, and by going to “Properties”. Then, in the “General” part, you must define “-debug” in launch options. You can then close the window and launch Project Zomboid.

In play, when you are in your game, the Debug mode will appear on the left side of your screen, below the other shortcuts. It is shaped like a mosquito, on a red background. You can then access different sub-menus and add or modify certain things in your game. All Debug options will be accessible via this menu.

If you want to turn it off, it’s easy. Go back to the game properties and delete the “-debug” line. Note that for either case (activate or deactivate Debug mode), a restart of the game is necessary to make the action active. Finally, it is advisable, as always, not to use Debug mode on a “normal” part, which you want to keep, to avoid corrupting a backup.
